# What is a merchant alliance programme?

A merchant alliance programme is a network of discounts and perks that a bank, insurer, telco or payment scheme offers its customers at partner merchants — restaurants, retailers, salons, airport lounges, hotels — presented under the organisation's own brand. The customer sees "20% off with your bank card." Behind that offer sits a negotiated agreement with the merchant, a rule that decides which cards qualify, a cap on redemptions, a way to check the merchant honours it, and a team that keeps all of it current.

## Why do banks and telcos run them?

Because a card that gets a customer a discount at their favourite restaurant is the card they reach for. Alliance programmes drive card usage, give a reason to choose one bank over another, and turn a monthly bill into something customers feel they get value from. For insurers, the same mechanics make a policy feel alive between renewals.

## What actually goes into running one?

Most organisations underestimate this, which is why many programmes launch well and fade within a year.

- **Merchant acquisition and negotiation.** A dedicated team signs merchants across dining, lifestyle, health, entertainment and travel, and renegotiates as terms change.
- **Discount configuration.** Each offer is set up by card BIN, so the right customers qualify, with caps and limits per campaign and real-time redemption data.
- **Verification.** Regular mystery shopping checks that a merchant actually gives the discount at the till. An offer shown in the app and refused in the shop generates a complaint against the bank, not the merchant.
- **Tiering.** Different benefits for different customer segments — standard, premium, corporate.
- **Analytics.** Transaction and redemption data show which offers are used, which categories are missing, and where to invest next.
- **Support.** A call centre and ticketing for cardholders who had a problem and merchants who have a question.
- **Marketing.** Offers only work if customers know about them.

## Why do programmes decay after launch?

Because the software is finished and the merchant data never is. Offers expire, branches close, terms change, and nobody told the bank. Within two quarters a catalogue that launched at 100% accuracy can have a large share of dead offers. The fix is not better software; it is an operation with named owners responsible for accuracy every week.

## Build it in-house, or use a partner?

Running an alliance programme well takes a merchant team, a technology platform, a verification process and a support function. For most banks it is a sideline that competes for attention with core products. A specialist partner runs it as a main business, under the bank's brand, with the merchant relationships already in place.

FetchSky has run alliance programmes for over ten years, with 5,000+ merchants in more than 50 cities serving over 5 million cards.
